Philips Hue is the most popular smart lighting system in the UK - and with good reason. The bulb range covers every UK fitting, the app is polished, and the system is rock-solid reliable. But if you’ve just bought your first Hue starter kit and aren’t sure where to start, this guide walks you through the whole setup from box to working lights in under 30 minutes.
What You Need
- Philips Hue bulbs - in the right fitting for your home (see below)
- Philips Hue Bridge - the small white box that connects your bulbs to the internet (included in starter kits; optional if you’re using Bluetooth-only mode)
- Ethernet cable - to connect the Bridge to your router
- Your home Wi-Fi password
- A smartphone with the free Philips Hue app (iOS or Android)
Choosing the Right UK Bulb Fitting
This is where UK buyers sometimes get caught out. Unlike the US (which almost universally uses E26 screw fittings), UK homes use several different fittings:
- B22 bayonet cap - the most common in UK ceiling pendant lights; twist to lock in. Look for the Philips Hue White or Colour Ambiance B22 range
- E27 screw - Edison screw, common in table lamps, floor lamps, and some pendant lights
- GU10 - the two-pin downlighter fitting; found in kitchen spotlights and bathroom ceiling lights. Philips Hue has a full GU10 range
- E14 small screw - used in chandeliers and some smaller fittings; Hue makes a Candle E14 bulb for these
If you’re not sure which fitting you have, turn off the light, let the bulb cool, then remove it - the fitting type is printed on the base of the existing bulb.
Bridge vs Bluetooth: Which Do You Need?
Philips Hue bulbs can work in two ways:
- Bluetooth mode - up to 10 bulbs, control only within Bluetooth range (~10 metres). No Bridge needed. Works with the Hue app. Limited automation, no remote access, no Alexa/Google Home
- Bridge mode - the full Hue experience. Up to 50 bulbs, remote access, automations, Alexa/Google Home/Apple HomeKit integration, Matter support. Requires the Hue Bridge plugged into your router
Our recommendation: buy a starter kit that includes the Bridge. The Bridge unlocks everything that makes Hue worth the premium price. Without it, you’re paying Hue prices for Bluetooth-only smart bulbs that budget alternatives do just as well.
Step-by-Step Setup
Step 1: Fit the bulbs
Turn off the light switch and fit your Hue bulbs in place of the existing ones. Make sure the light switch stays on after setup - the Hue system requires power to the bulb at all times. If the switch is off, the bulb loses power and can’t respond to the app or voice commands.
Step 2: Set up the Bridge
Plug the Hue Bridge into a spare port on your router using the included Ethernet cable, then plug the Bridge into the mains. The three LED dots on the Bridge will light up - this takes about a minute.
Step 3: Download the Hue app
Download the Philips Hue app from the App Store or Google Play. Open it and create a free account (required for remote access and to save your settings).
Step 4: Add the Bridge
The app will automatically find the Bridge on your network. Tap it, then press the physical button on the top of the Bridge when prompted. This is a security step to confirm you’re present.
Step 5: Add your bulbs
Tap Add lights. The Bridge will search for and add all Hue bulbs in range - this usually takes 30-60 seconds per bulb. If a bulb isn’t found, try turning it off and on at the switch to reset it, then search again.
Step 6: Create rooms
Group your bulbs into rooms (Living Room, Bedroom, Kitchen etc.). This lets you control all the lights in a room together - “turn off the living room” switches off every bulb in that group.
Step 7: Set up schedules and scenes
In the app: tap a room → Routines to create schedules (e.g. dim the bedroom lights at 10pm on weekdays). Tap Scenes to set colour/brightness combinations you can recall with one tap or a voice command.

Connecting Hue to Alexa or Google Home
Alexa: Open the Alexa app → Devices → + → Add Device → Philips Hue → Link accounts. Alexa will find all your Hue lights and rooms automatically.
Google Home: Open the Google Home app → + → Set up device → Works with Google → Philips Hue → Sign in with your Hue account. All rooms and lights will import automatically.
Apple HomeKit: In the Hue app → Settings → Voice Assistants → Apple HomeKit → follow the setup steps. You’ll scan a HomeKit QR code to add the Hue Bridge as a HomeKit accessory, then all bulbs appear in the Apple Home app.
Expanding Your System
Once you’re set up, expanding is simple - buy additional Hue bulbs and add them in the app. The Bridge supports up to 50 bulbs. You can also add:
- Hue Dimmer Switch - battery-powered, sticks to any wall, controls a room of lights without using the app
- Hue Motion Sensor - triggers lights automatically when you enter a room
- Hue Outdoor lights - weatherproof bulbs and fixtures for gardens and entrances
- Hue Play light bars - behind your TV for bias lighting and Sync entertainment effects

Frequently Asked Questions
What if a bulb isn’t found during the “Add lights” step?
Turn the bulb off and on again at the wall switch to reset it, then search again in the app - this resolves the vast majority of “bulb not found” issues, since it’s usually a case of the bulb not being in pairing mode rather than a genuine fault.
Can I start with Bluetooth mode and add the Bridge later?
Yes - bulbs already set up in Bluetooth mode transfer over to Bridge mode automatically once you add a Bridge and follow its setup steps, so starting simple and upgrading later doesn’t mean starting from scratch.
